The new Eurowings Fanairbus begins its scheduled service across Europe today. The Airbus A320 in a special black and yellow livery, which was officially unveiled in Dortmund this weekend, took off from Düsseldorf today towards Barcelona. In future, it will be used as an ambassador for top-class football and fan culture in the European route network of Eurowings – preferably from Dortmund, the home base of the new BVB Fanairbus. In addition to this, Eurowings will ensure that Borussia Dortmund fans can regularly follow the team to important away games on "their" aircraft.
Eurowings is the first airline in the world to dedicate a plane to football fans: at an event in the hangar of Dortmund’s airport with 150 invited guests, Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings, Hans-Joachim Watzke, Chairman of the Management Board of Borussia Dortmund, and Borussia Dortmund Managing Director Carsten Cramer, symbolically handed over the Airbus A320 to the fans of BVB with an oversized boarding pass. It was a highly emotional moment for the fans as they boarded "their plane" for the first time and were then allowed to pose for a picture with the current team and a number of BVB legends. The Fanairbus itself was also dressed for the occasion: it presented itself to the guests wrapped in a huge fan scarf.
Legendary moments in BVB history on the plane
BVB fans were actively involved in the design of the fan airbus in the run-up to the event. They were able to help decide which of the most popular moments and stars in BVB's history should be portrayed on the aircraft. After voting by more than 10,000 Borussia fans, the winning motifs were chosen: a highly demanding challenge for the week-long painting of the Airbus. The livery was designed and implemented in the unique drawing style of the football artists "Hands of God".
"We are proud to be the first airline in the world to dedicate an aircraft to football fans. What makes it so special is the feat of creating the pictograms of the nine most legendary BVB moments in such a way that football fans can immediately identify players and heroic scenes. This has been extraordinarily successful – truly Champions-League-level work," said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. "As the home carrier of North Rhine-Westphalia, we are delighted that the Fanairbus will now be taking off from Dortmund as often as possible."
"We are proud that we have had such a strong partnership with Eurowings for seven years and that, after the "Mannschaftsairbus", we can now also present a Fanairbus as a joint appreciation for our fans. The new Fanairbus looks amazing and we are delighted that our fans were able to participate so intensively in the design and can now accompany us on our away games in their own aircraft," said Carsten Cramer, Managing Director of Borussia Dortmund.
"We are delighted that the second Eurowings Airbus stationed in Dortmund is also a very special, unique aircraft. A clear sign of the trust in the location and the solidarity with the region," as Dortmund Airport CEO Ludger van Bebber stated enthusiastically. "Many of our passengers are fans of BVB, and now they can all have a fantastic start to their holiday. Eurowings is launching another eye-catcher that will be an ambassador for BVB and our hometown of Dortmund at various destinations.
During the event, Eurowings and Borussia Dortmund also signed the extension of their partnership for another two years. Eurowings has been a partner of Borussia Dortmund since the 2016/17 season. The most visible sign of the cooperation is the "Mannschaftsairbus", which BVB uses to travel to its European away games and regularly flies Eurowings passengers to holiday destinations. In the process, the black-and-yellow "ambassador" has become one of the most photographed airplanes in Europe.
