Despite weather-related disruptions to flight operations at the start of the year and strikes by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) trade union, Eurowings operated 75,000 flights with a regularity rate of nearly 99 per cent. Eurowings was forced to make significant last-minute adjustments to its schedule due to the conflicts in the Middle East. In total, more than ten million passengers chose Germany’s largest holiday airline in the first six months of 2026.

This strong operational performance once again resulted in positive feedback from passengers: customer satisfaction, measured using the Net Promoter Score (NPS), stood at 47 – a figure recognised as high within the industry. The fact that, according to surveys, more than 71 per cent of passengers would choose to fly with Eurowings again confirms the strong support customers have for the Lufthansa Group’s value airline. The average flight load factor rose to 85.3 per cent.

Particularly in the second quarter of 2026, Eurowings recorded a noticeable upturn in demand – especially on routes to the western Mediterranean. Traditional holiday destinations, led by Mallorca, benefited significantly from the shift in booking behaviour resulting from the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. In addition, Eurowings expanded its presence at Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) in 2026 and is now connecting the German capital with around 50 destinations for the first time in its summer schedule. The current focus of this expansion is on direct connections to European capitals such as London, Lisbon and Sarajevo, as well as Rome (from November).

All in all, the Lufthansa Group’s point-to-point business segment – comprising Eurowings and its stake in SunExpress – posted a loss of 252 million euros in the first half of 2026 (adjusted EBIT). Especially higher fuel costs resulting from the conflict in the Middle East as well as increased taxes and charges in Germany as an aviation hub are having a negative impact here. Holiday airlines generate a large proportion of their earnings between June and October – the period that includes the peak travel season for holidaymakers.

Strategy

The agreement was reached during a meeting between Balearic President Marga Prohens and Eurowings CEO Max Kownatzki at the government headquarters in Palma. The goal is to distribute tourism demand more evenly throughout the year and create additional employment opportunities, particularly during the autumn and winter months.

To support this initiative, the airline will expand its presence in Mallorca starting with the 2026/27 winter schedule. For the first time, Eurowings plans to base six aircraft in Palma de Mallorca during a winter season – twice as many as just two years ago. With this growth, Eurowings supports the Balearic Government’s efforts to extend the tourism season and spread economic activity more evenly across the year.

In addition, Eurowings is evaluating the expansion of its technical infrastructure in Palma. In the long term, this could create highly skilled, year-round jobs in aircraft maintenance. For Eurowings, a local maintenance facility would simplify support for its growing fleet. Mallorca, in turn, could benefit from the development of a technology-focused business sector that currently has only a limited presence on the island. President Prohens and CEO Kownatzki also discussed potential cooperation with universities on workforce development and innovation initiatives.

“Eurowings brings not only visitors to the island but also highly qualified jobs,” said Kownatzki. “The goals of the Balearic Government and Eurowings complement one another. Together, we want to create the conditions necessary to establish Mallorca more firmly as a destination for all four seasons.” He added that the island offers a wide range of experiences beyond the classic beach holiday. “Especially outside the peak season, Mallorca attracts athletes, nature enthusiasts, and travelers seeking relaxation thanks to its milder temperatures.”

The expansion plans build on a long-standing partnership. Since opening its Palma base in 2017, Eurowings has continuously expanded its operations and now employs nearly 1,000 people locally. During the summer months, the Lufthansa Group airline connects the island with 26 airports and operates approximately 400 weekly flights, primarily to and from Germany and Austria.

Eurowings’ activities in Mallorca already extend beyond flight operations. Through the establishment of Wings Handling, its ground handling company, the airline has invested in local infrastructure and gained experience in building long-term business operations on the island. This creates shared opportunities for both partners: while the Balearic Government continues to promote Mallorca’s development as an attractive year-round business and tourism destination, Eurowings contributes to this progress through its strong local presence and targeted investments.

Strategy

More than 75 per cent of 27,000 flights operated in the first quarter reached their destination on time. Despite a challenging environment, Eurowings achieved a regularity rate of 98.2 per cent. Weather-related factors caused significant disruptions to flight operations at times – for example, operations at the capital’s BER airport were severely restricted for several days. Furthermore, Eurowings had to adjust its schedule due to the armed conflicts in the Middle East. In total, over 3.6 million passengers chose Germany’s largest leisure airline in the first three months of 2026.

Customer satisfaction, as measured by the Net Promoter Score (NPS), stood at 46 – a figure recognised as high within the industry. The fact that, according to surveys, more than 74 per cent of passengers would choose to fly with Eurowings again confirms the strong customer support for Lufthansa Group’s value airline. The average seat load factor rose to 84.4 per cent.

Eurowings recorded sustained high demand in the first quarter of 2026, particularly for leisure travel, and has expanded its service offering by five per cent despite operational restrictions in the Gulf region. At the same time, the airline has expanded its presence at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport (BER) and, for the first time, will connect the German capital with 47 destinations in the summer timetable. In doing so, Eurowings is strengthening connections to European capitals and major cities, and is connecting Berlin non-stop with London, Lisbon and Sarajevo for the first time, as well as with Rome from November. At the same time, the value airline is increasing frequencies on high-demand routes to warm-weather destinations, thereby making its offering even more attractive for holidaymakers and families travelling from BER.

All in all, the Lufthansa Group’s point-to-point business segment – comprising Eurowings and its stake in SunExpress – posted a loss of 215 million euros in the first quarter of 2026 (adjusted EBIT). Around 72 percent of the 170,000 flights reached their destination on time. Eurowings achieved a reliability rate of over 99 percent and responded to the sustained high demand, particularly for tourist flights, with a significant expansion of its program. A total of 23.7 million passengers chose Germany's largest holiday airline between January and December 2025.

"We are delighted that we were able to offer our guests such an excellent performance," says Eurowings CFO Kai Duve. "Overall, we welcomed over 900,000 additional guests on board compared to the previous year and flew them to 150 different destinations across Europe. The fact that around two-thirds of our customers actively recommend Eurowings is the result of a strong team effort with a clear focus on quality, reliability and customer orientation. He succeeds Jens Bischof, who is stepping down from the position of Chief Executive Officer at the end of the year after more than five years at the helm of Eurowings and over 35 years in leading roles within the Lufthansa Group.

Under the leadership of Jens Bischof, who took over at Eurowings in March 2020 in the midst of the global coronavirus crisis, the airline achieved a remarkable and sustainable turnaround. The previously loss-making company developed into one of the most successful airlines within the Lufthansa Group. This year, Eurowings was named “Best Low-Cost Airline in Europe” by the prestigious rating agency Skytrax.

“Jens Bischof guided Eurowings through one of the most difficult phases in aviation with impressive passion, courage and a clear customer focus. His work has left its mark – on our guests, our employees and the entire Lufthansa Group,” emphasizes Michael Niggemann, Member of the Executive Board of the Lufthansa Group. “Thanks to his quality and service offensive, Eurowings is now a brand that inspires confidence and enthusiasm among customers and employees alike. Last year, SunExpress increased its revenue by 23 percent to €2.2 billion and carried around 15 million passengers – more than ever before in the company's history.

“With Max Kownatzki, Eurowings is gaining a leader who combines strategic vision, operational excellence and a great passion for the world of flying. He understands the dynamics of the international airline business like few others – and he understands Eurowings,” Niggemann continued. “I am convinced that he will not only continue Eurowings' successful course, but also boldly develop it further. His energy, expertise and focus on the future will take Eurowings to the next level.”

Eurowings is familiar territory for Max Kownatzki: he was co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer of Eurowings Europe flight operations back in 2015. This means that the Lufthansa Group's value airline achieved a growth of over 600,000 passengers from January to September 2025 compared to the previous year. Thanks to a very stable operational performance, reliability rose to over 99 percent – a top figure in the industry. The result is high customer satisfaction ratings: the Net Promoter Score (NPS) was 42, confirming the strong support of passengers for the Lufthansa Group's value airline.

“We can look back on a strong travel season with top performance,” said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. “Due to high demand, we have significantly expanded our flight program and made it even more attractive for our customers by adding many new destinations. The strong performance of our Eurowings teams deserves all the more respect because we are operating in a market in Germany where location costs continue to rise, making flights increasingly expensive and therefore unprofitable on many routes.”

Eurowings continues to expand medium-haul destinations – and cuts back on domestic traffic

In its 2025/26 winter schedule, Eurowings is expanding its range of medium-haul flights in particular, connecting Düsseldorf with Dubai three times a week. This means that, for the first time, travelers can fly directly from the capital of North Rhine-Westphalia to the popular desert metropolis with Eurowings. In total, Eurowings will then be offering a total of 28 weekly direct flights to Dubai from the airports Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Berlin, Stuttgart and Hanover. In addition to this, Amman in Jordan is a new destination in the Eurowings schedule from Stuttgart, and the range of flights to Morocco is growing as well: Eurowings will connect Marrakesh with Hanover, Salzburg, Stuttgart and Prague for the first time.

In exchange for these expansions, Eurowings is reducing the number of domestic German flights, which are particularly burdened by fees, due to the record-high overall costs in Germany as an aviation location. The Nuremberg-Hamburg, Hamburg-Cologne/Bonn and Dortmund-Munich routes have already been removed from the schedule.

The bottom line is that the Lufthansa Group's point-to-point business segment – consisting of Eurowings and its stake in SunExpress – posted a positive result of €61 million (adjusted EBIT) as of 30 October 2025. The number of employees rose to just under 5,500.

Strategy

Of the 27,000 flights operated in the first quarter, more than 85 percent reached their destination on time. Eurowings achieved a regularity rate of over 98 percent. Without the series of strikes in the public sector, which saw the Verdi union bring German airports to a standstill for days, Eurowings would have even achieved a record figure of 99.5 percent. Customer satisfaction, measured using the Net Promoter Score (NPS), rose to 55 – a recognized high in the industry. A total of around 3.4 million passengers chose Germany's largest leisure airline.

“We are delighted to be able to offer our guests such a top performance,” says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. "During the Easter holidays alone, we flew more than one million passengers to their destinations across Europe – with a regularity of almost 100 percent. The fact that, according to surveys, more than 80 percent of our customers would choose to fly with Eurowings again is the result of an outstanding team effort. It spurs us on to continue this strong performance in 2025, which is once again shaping up to be a strong year for bookings."

Eurowings also recorded strong demand for tourist flights in the first quarter of 2025 and expanded its offering by 12 percent – including additional direct connections to the Gulf region, which Eurowings has gradually increased in response to positive feedback. Overall, Lufthansa Group's point-to-point business segment – consisting of Eurowings and the stake in SunExpress – posted a loss of EUR 201 million (adjusted EBIT) in the first quarter of 2025. In addition to the traditionally weaker winter business, this reflects the continuing rise in taxes and fees at Germany's aviation hub. The number of employees rose to just under 5,400.

Strategy

The Lufthansa Group's point-to-point business segment – consisting of Eurowings and the stake in SunExpress – posted a positive result of 203 million euros (adjusted EBIT) in 2024. Eurowings is thus defying the difficult conditions in German air traffic with its high location costs and sharply rising taxes and fees.

The once again profitable financial year is largely due to the focus on and expansion of the tourism business. In 2024, around 23 million passengers chose Eurowings, which recorded an 11 percent increase in revenue to around EUR 2.9 billion. The number of employees rose to 5,300. As part of its expansion, Eurowings benefited in particular from the first direct connections to the Gulf region, which were successively expanded due to strong demand. Germany's largest leisure airline connects the destinations of Dubai, Jeddah and – in future – Abu Dhabi with German metropolitan regions such as Berlin. Strong impulses for growth are also coming from the establishment of the company's own tour operator. Eurowings Holidays offers the more than 20 million customers of Eurowings tailor-made and fully relaxed holiday packages from a single source. The new company is set to become one of the ‘top ten’ German tour operators in the next few years.

Jens Bischof, CEO Eurowings: "The strong 2024 result is first and foremost an outstanding team effort by our employees throughout Europe, which deserves the highest recognition. The figures also show that our repositioning as a value airline for Europe is increasingly bearing fruit. This motivates us to continue this success story in 2025."

Strategy

The new company has already been entered in the commercial register in Cologne as Eurowings Holidays GmbH and will officially start operations on 1 April 2025.

With this strategic start-up, Eurowings is setting an important milestone in the growing tourism business. Eurowings Holidays GmbH is taking over the staff and tourism IT systems of well-known media and tourism entrepreneur Karlheinz Kögel in Baden-Baden (whose businesses include the HLX Group) in order to rapidly implement and utilize proven expertise. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price of the transfer. In the initial phase, around 100 tourism experts will work for Eurowings Holidays, of which more than 50 employees will come from Binoli GmbH, a subsidiary of Kögel's HLX Group.

Kögel, who also owns the market research company Media Control, is regarded as a pioneer of the dynamic tour operator model, which enables more individual holiday offers than the classic package tour. As the founder of tour operator L'Tur, Kögel successfully established last-minute travel in the market. Since 2020, the HLX Group has also built up the Eurowings Holidays holiday brand and has developed it into a relevant player in the German tourism industry within a short space of time.

Tailor-made holidays for more than 20 million customers
The new company under the umbrella of the Lufthansa Group will create a tour operator that can offer customized holidays from a single source – including for more than 20 million customers who have mainly booked flights with Eurowings to date. In future, the company will offer flexible travel packages that include hotel accommodation, transfers, etc. in addition to flights. With low deposits and the option to rebook free of charge as well as to cancel at a reasonable price, Eurowings Holidays offers maximum flexibility in holiday planning.

The expansion to a more data-driven business model and the integration of advanced technologies are key factors for future growth. Eurowings Digital GmbH, a company with expertise in the fields of e-commerce, data science and artificial intelligence (AI), will make a significant contribution to the further development of Eurowings Holidays. The Eurowings Digital subsidiary based in Cologne's Schanzenstraße start-up district has grown dynamically since its founding in 2018 and now employs almost 300 digital experts from 36 countries around the world.

The next step in Eurowings' tourism expansion has come at the right time: under CEO Jens Bischof, Eurowings has developed from an airline primarily focused on business travel into a leading and commercially successful holiday airline. Among other things, Eurowings operates a base on Europe's favorite sunny island of Mallorca and offers more than 400 weekly connections between Palma and 26 different airports during the high season. Eurowings is also the undisputed market leader at German locations such as Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Cologne and Stuttgart.

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof: “We are combining our leading position in holiday flights with excellent package tour and digital expertise. We are thus strengthening our business model and developing into an innovative force in the growing tourism market. The high profile and popularity of our brand will help to establish Eurowings Holidays among the ‘top ten’ German tour operators in the near future.”

Karlheinz Kögel: “The Eurowings Holidays brand has made a significant contribution to the outstanding development of the HLX Group, which counted 333,000 guests last year and generated revenue of 275 million euros. It is not easy for me to sell significant parts of this successful business segment, but it also fills me with pride that we have turned our dynamic tour operator into a real success story with a great deal of passion and meticulousness. My sincere thanks go to our joint team, whose excellent work made this success possible in the first place.”

Strategy,Product & Services

In the same period last year, the business segment, which specializes in affordable business and leisures flights generated a profit of EUR 147 million.

The good result is largely due to the change in strategic direction since the Covid crisis. The accelerated expansion of the tourism business helped the Cologne-based company increase its turnover to 2.2 billion euros. The number of passengers carried rose to over 18 million in the first nine months of 2024. The Lufthansa subsidiary responded to the continuing strong demand for leisure travel in particular by significantly expanding its program. For the first time, more than 150 destinations in 39 countries were on the flight schedule of Germany's largest holiday airline.

‘This outstanding result is a strong team performance. It deserves all the more respect because we are operating in a market in Germany with rapidly rising infrastructure and location costs, which are making flights increasingly expensive and therefore less profitable on many routes,’ says CEO Jens Bischof. 'At the same time, we are benefiting from the fact that we are increasingly strengthening our position outside Germany and our positioning as a value airline for Europe is becoming more and more visible. The rating agency Skytrax has confirmed that we are on the right track by awarding us the coveted four-star seal. According to Skytrax, the pronounced service awareness of our crews plays a decisive role in this. They are more professional, more experienced and friendlier in their dealings with passengers than their competitors. This appreciation makes us proud and spurs us on.’

Strategy

The campaign launch marks a milestone in the evolution of the Eurowings brand, which is currently undergoing a comprehensive repositioning.

As part of this realignment, Eurowings has revised its brand architecture. The focus is on a new brand model and the clearly defined brand core “More ease for everyone”. This core message runs through all facets of the campaign and reflects the positioning of Eurowings as a leading European value airline. With “That’s fly!”, Eurowings conveys this effortlessness in a likeable and authentic way – both to its own employees and to the public.

The aim of the repositioning is to strengthen the emotional bond with Eurowings and sharpen the profile of the value airline. With its high-quality services at attractive prices, Eurowings now stands out very clearly from the low-cost airline segment. “Our new brand essence ‘More ease for everyone’ very precisely reflects both the essence of our rational customer benefits and their emotional significance for our guests,” explains Dirk Otto, Head of Marketing at Eurowings. “With the ‘That’s fly!’ campaign, Jung von Matt SPREE has succeeded in communicating our vision creatively and succinctly. Building on this, we want to communicate in a bolder, more humorous and strikingly different way than the competition going forward and develop the Eurowings brand into a love brand.”

Henning Lisson, Executive Creative Director at Jung von Matt SPREE, adds: “Eurowings has the potential to evoke positive emotions through its clear positioning and strong communication. ‘That’s fly!’ expresses this effortlessness in a likeable way and shows that Eurowings can look at itself with a wink and a smile.”

The core elements of the campaign are cinematic ‘hero’ assets that focus on different target group segments and the smart Eurowings features that are tailored to them. Eurowings is relying on a broad media distribution of the humorous and ironic productions: the TV premiere will take place tonight during prime time. Further releases will follow in cinemas, on streaming platforms and on social media such as YouTube and Instagram.

Watch the TV spot here

Agency set-up: Jung von Matt SPREE, Zenith, La Red, Traffic Productions.

Strategy

With the start of the summer school holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia (from 8 July 2024), holidaymakers will also be able to regularly travel the popular route from Dusseldorf to Palma de Mallorca in a hot air balloon. Germany's largest holiday airline is primarily aiming to counter growing capacity bottlenecks on the air traffic routes to Mallorca. The more than 420 weekly connections offered by Eurowings to Europe's most popular sunny island in the summer were almost fully booked well before Easter.

As further aircraft are not available from Airbus or Boeing at such short notice, Eurowings decided to expand the so-called “Palma Shuttle” – also to put more pressure on the two major aircraft manufacturers. With this step, the Lufthansa Group airline can also meet the rapidly growing demand for extraordinary travel experiences. The new service makes it possible for passengers to experience the picturesque landscape on the way to Mallorca from a completely new perspective.

“With the expansion of our Palma Shuttle, we are setting an example for innovation and a spirit of adventure. We are delighted to be the first airline in Europe to offer our customers this unique way of travelling,” says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. “Travelling by hot air balloon is a fascinating and thoroughly romantic way to make the journey an unforgettable experience – even if the journey to Palma de Mallorca takes a little longer than by plane.”

Lars Redeligx, CEO of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH, is delighted: “A pioneering idea that is finally having its moment! During the Covid pandemic, we had already made initial plans for balloon flights at the airport but had to put them on hold for the time being for cost reasons. Now we can finally realize them. Ballooning simply fits perfectly into our strategy of being an excellent, exemplary sustainable airport. This makes us the first major airport in Germany to put a vertiport into operation – right next to the helicopter landing pad of the state police. If successful, I can imagine an expansion to domestic feeder flights within Germany.”

Five hot air balloons expand Eurowings fleet
To enter the new business segment, Eurowings has ordered five hot air balloons and optioned ten more. The vehicles not only have powerful burners, but also two newly designed engines – specially developed for Eurowings – which can significantly speed up journeys with the colorful giants on long-haul routes. Initial test flights with the “Burgundy Dreams” balloons have shown that the journey can be completed in six to eight hours, depending on weather conditions. The balloon baskets are expertly hand-woven and can comfortably accommodate up to twelve passengers – pilot's bar included.

All necessary permits and licenses for the expansion of business operations have already been obtained. As with conventional Eurowings aircraft, regular inspections and maintenance are also carried out on the balloons to ensure that they are in perfect condition at all times.

Eurowings balloon flights are operated by experienced and qualified pilots who ensure the safety and comfort of guests. Eurowings has posted a corresponding job advertisement for the expansion of the pilot corps on the career portal today.

Flight times vary depending on the weather
As balloon flights are highly dependent on the weather, passengers will be advised of the necessary flexibility at the time of booking: Flights will be offered on Mondays and Thursdays; however, it cannot be ruled out that they will have to be postponed if conditions are unfavorable. The balloon flights will be available for booking as of 24 April on the Eurowings homepage, with prices starting at 599 euros (one-way).

Attention April Fool's joke: Don't let yourself be taken for a ride!
As Germany’s largest holiday airline, it is part of our brand philosophy to provide holiday fun. Most of the time it’s a bit more holiday, sometimes a bit more fun. And when, if not on 1 April… By the way: Successful April Fool’s jokes are a tradition at Eurowings. Last year, we issued a “sweatpants ban” on board of Eurowings flights on 1 April with a reach of millions (and some confusion) – in the middle of the heated discussion about a corresponding ban on sweatpants at schools in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Strategy,Product & Services

Overall, the point-to-point business segment of Lufthansa Group, consisting of Eurowings and the stake in SunExpress, generated a positive result of 205 million euros (Adjusted EBIT) in 2023. The business segment, which specializes in affordable flights for business and leisure travelers, thus achieved a historic profit turnaround. In the previous year, there was still a loss of 197 million euros.

Eurowings' financial turnaround is largely due to strategic changes since the Covid crisis. The significant expansion of the tourism business helped the Cologne-based company increase its turnover by 40 percent to around EUR 2.6 billion. Eurowings benefited in particular from the lasting desire to travel after the pandemic years and a summer season with new record numbers of guests, including to Mallorca. Eurowings operates a growing base here, connecting Europe's favorite sunny island with 26 airports in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. This summer, Eurowings will offer more than 400 weekly connections to and from Palma for the first time – a new record. Among the more than 150 destinations in the Eurowings route network, the holiday hotspots of Greece, Italy and Spain also remain in high demand.

Kai Duve, Eurowings Chief Financial Officer (CFO): “The financial turnaround is not only a historic milestone for Eurowings, but first and foremost a strong team effort by our 5,000 employees, which deserves the highest recognition. We can see that our reorganization as a value airline for Europe is succeeding. As a result, we have developed from an airline with a strong domestic German focus into a leading European leisure airline. We will continue on this path, expand the tourism sector in a targeted manner and bring even more Eurowings to Europe in 2024.”

Strategy

This new partnership will boost leisure and business travel between Greece and Germany by offering enhanced customer options.

The bilateral codeshare agreement between AEGEAN and Eurowings offers passengers a great experience from a growing range of direct connections to the highly popular tourist regions of Greece and Germany. Selected flights operated by AEGEAN, the airline that knows Greece best, will also be bookable under Eurowings flight numbers, while Eurowings flights will also be available under AEGEAN flight numbers and marketed via the partner airline's respective channels.

In a first step, AEGEAN will assign its (A3) code to direct flights operated by Eurowings connecting Heraklion (Crete) and Thessaloniki with Eurowings bases in Germany, Austria and the Czech Republic. Eurowings, on the other hand, will assign its code to AEGEAN flights – directly connecting Athens and Thessaloniki with its bases in Germany and the Czech Republic. The plan of both airlines is to gradually expand the joint route offering.

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof said: “The cooperation is part of our European growth strategy and strengthens our position as the largest German leisure airline. In the tradition of the Lufthansa Group, we stand for a cooperative approach that allows Europe to grow closer together. The agreement comes at exactly the right time, as we are currently recording the strongest incoming bookings in four years – a clear indication of how strongly the market will develop in the 2024 travel summer.”

Roland Jaggi, AEGEAN’s Chief Commercial Officer added: “We are very pleased with this codeshare agreement as it further expands our network, offers extended options to our customers and supports our commitment to create value through synergies with eminent partners. This collaboration creates new opportunities for our passengers and paves the way for another successful step for the benefit of both airlines and the Greek tourism industry as well”.

Pan-European focus with partners from the south
he codeshare agreement with AEGEAN complements the cooperation that Eurowings has been nurturing with the leading Czech airline Smartwings since 2021 and enables a growing number of direct connections from Prague for customers. It offers customers of both airlines more than 140 connections on the websites of the respective partner and thus access to a significantly larger range of travel options throughout Europe.

Partner and Cooperations,Strategy

For the first time, sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) can be selected directly during the booking process in two of the three new package options. SAF is produced from biogenic residues such as used cooking oils and reduces CO₂ emissions by at least 80 percent compared to fossil fuels – an alternative to fossil aviation fuel and essential for the energy transition in aviation. The Lufthansa Group is already one of the world's five largest SAF customers. They consume up to 20 percent less fuel with correspondingly lower emissions. For example, on the route from Düsseldorf to Mallorca, a fully occupied A321neo only consumes 1.9 liters per person and 100 kilometers. The flight programme for the first weeks included 16 different destinations. Flight EW9856 from Düsseldorf to Palma de Mallorca was the first flight with which the latest addition to the fleet, registration D-AEEA, entered scheduled service on 20 July. Since then, the long "Mallorca Airbus" has flown many thousands of travel-happy passengers to their holidays.

The "Mallorca-Airbus": Highly efficient and quiet

The Airbus A321neo is by far the most efficient and quietest short-haul and medium-haul jet in the world and is the most visible sign yet of more than 50 sustainability initiatives at Eurowings. The aircraft has a significantly improved environmental performance compared to previous generations: 50 per cent reduced noise emissions, up to 20 per cent less fuel consumption and equally reduced CO2 emissions.

The seating capacity for up to 232 guests earns the newcomer the nickname "Mallorca-Airbus" - fitting for the Cologne-based company's well-known "Mallorca Shuttle". In the summer season, the A321neo will be increasingly deployed towards the Balearic island to serve the continuing high demand for the most popular destination in the Eurowings network. The Lufthansa subsidiary flies to the island's capital Palma up to 400 times a week in the high season. With the A321neo, Eurowings is continuing its fleet modernisation. In the course of the year, the airline will take delivery of another three aircraft of this type - the addition of a further A321neo is planned for February 2024. Together with the seven A320neo aircraft, the neo fleet of Eurowings will then comprise 13 aircraft.

Airspace Cabin for even more passenger comfort

The luggage compartments of the new Airspace Cabin have a 40 per cent larger volume and can even hold 60 per cent more suitcases, as these can be stowed vertically in the compartments. Another highlight is the new flexible lighting system, which is geared to passengers' biorhythms depending on the phase of the flight and time of day and illuminates the cabin in either warm orange or cooler blue tones.

To underline the importance of the A321neo for the topic of sustainability, Eurowings has made a comprehensive documentation of the introduction of the "sustainability ambassador": With more than 30 different cameras in a wide variety of positions and using state-of-the-art drones, a film crew followed the transfer of the aircraft from the Airbus factory site in Hamburg Finkenwerder to its home base in Düsseldorf. Thanks to close coordination with German Air Traffic Control and DUS Airport, a video was created that provides completely new perspectives on one of the most modern commercial aircraft in the world and sets new standards in communicating the topic of "sustainability".

Strategy,Responsibility

With the start of the 2023/24 winter flight schedule, Eurowings will fly to Gran Canaria, Hurghada and Marsa Alam as well as to Mallorca from the Franconian metropolis. From Hanover, the winter flight schedule includes the destinations Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Hurghada, Pristina and Mallorca.

In the 2024 summer flight schedule, the commitment will be strengthened, and travellers from Lower Saxony and Bavaria can look forward to many new nonstop destinations: for example, Eurowings will fly from Nuremberg to Heraklion three times a week. The new Greek destinations of Preveza and Rhodes will each be served twice a week. From Nuremberg, Eurowings will fly to the Balearic Island of Mallorca 14 times a week.

In addition to two weekly flights to Faro in Portugal and the new destination of Malaga (four times a week), the Eurowings program from Hanover places a clear focus on Italy: With Rome (four times a week), Catania and Naples (three times a week), Bari, Olbia and Lamezia Terme (twice a week each), Eurowings ensures good and direct connections to one of the most popular vacation destinations for North Germans. The summer offer from Lower Saxony's most important airport is supplemented by flights to Thessaloniki (twice a week), 14 weekly connections to Mallorca and the connection to Pristina (once a week).

“Out of the crisis, we have fundamentally changed Eurowings and developed into Germany's largest vacation airline,” said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. “We will now expand this position in a targeted manner and also strengthen ourselves very significantly at Nuremberg and Hanover airports. With our program of attractive direct flights, we will ensure better connections from Lower Saxony and northern Bavaria to the most popular sunny destinations in southern Europe in particular.”

As part of this growth, Eurowings will again station one aircraft each permanently at its new bases in Nuremberg and Hanover from the 2023/24 winter flight schedule. From summer 2024, the base in the capital of Lower Saxony will be increased by a further Eurowings aircraft.

The Eurowings destinations in winter 2023/24 from Nuremberg:

Gran Canaria

Marsa Alam

Hurghada

Mallorca

The Eurowings destinations in winter 2023/24 from Hanover:

Gran Canaria

Tenerife

Hurghada

Mallorca

Pristina

The Eurowings destinations in summer 2024 from Nuremberg:

Heraklion

Rhodes

Preveza

Mallorca

The Eurowings destinations in summer 2024 from Hanover:

Faro

Malaga

Catania

Olbia

Lamezia Terme

Bari

Naples

Rome

Thessaloniki

Mallorca

Strategy

Germany's largest leisure airline now has more than 4,700 employees, including around 1,500 colleagues hired since the crisis.

They were recruited in particular for the flight operations of Eurowings Germany and Eurowings Europe, as well as for the fast-growing IT startup Eurowings Digital GmbH at the Cologne location. As a result, the airline is heading into the summer holiday season with a record number of employees in order to be as well-staffed as possible and able to fly at times up to 100,000 passengers a day to their well-deserved vacations.

Ready for the Mallorca boom

Once again this year, the most important and by far the most popular summer destination for Germans is Mallorca. With a growing Eurowings base at Palma and using the largest Airbus medium-haul jet A321 (more than 230 seats), Eurowings will shuttle between Mallorca and Germany up to 400 times a week. Other sunny destinations are also very popular with Eurowings customers – this year Crete and Rhodes in Greece in particular, as well as numerous destinations in Italy, Spain and Turkey.

The strong comeback of the travel industry continues to keep the human resources department at Eurowings in high gear: By the end of the year, the Lufthansa Group airline, which specializes in affordable flights within Europe, is expected to approach the threshold of 5,000 employees for the first time – and exceed it next year. The company is still looking for numerous specialists, especially IT experts, technicians, pilots and flight attendants.

Interested parties (m/f/d) can find all vacancies and additional information at lufthansagroup.careers. In order to continue the development of the company's growth course towards Europe, Eurowings will also be presenting itself at a roadshow in the next few days, starting on 22 June in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic. Eurowings operates a thriving base in this city, as well as a partnership with Smartwings, the country's largest airline. The other roadshow dates are in Wroclaw (11 July), Krakow (12 July), Warsaw (13 July), Split (9 August) and Bucharest (22 August).

With these measures, Eurowings is developing rapidly – not only in terms of company size, but also in terms of diversity. The Cologne-based company's pan-European growth course means that Eurowings now has employees from more than 50 nations. The proportion of women in flight operations at Eurowings Germany is 53 percent, and 49 percent across all occupational groups and companies.

Kai Duve, Managing Director Finance and Human Resources at Eurowings: “We are delighted and confident to see how quickly the travel industry is emerging from its longest and most difficult crisis. With the recruitment of more than 1,500 new employees, Eurowings has made all the preparations in terms of personnel to ensure that passengers have the smoothest possible start into their summer vacations. We have already demonstrated this during the first vacation peaks of the year at Easter and Whitsun. We are confident that our airport partners have also prepared well for this summer, so that together we can give our guests a good start to their vacations.”

Strategy

In particular, the wholly-owned subsidiary of the airline Eurowings is looking to hire talents in the areas of e-commerce, software development and digital product & customer experience. “The combination of business and IT skills in integrated in-house teams makes all the difference,” says Michael Erfert, Head of Sales & Distribution at Eurowings and Managing Director of Eurowings Digital.

“With 300 digital experts going forward, we are continuously investing in a state-of-the-art platform that offers passengers improved products and services along the entire travel chain,” adds Johannes Hansen, the second Managing Director of Eurowings Digital and CIO of Eurowings. Inspiration for the next trip and a simple search function for affordable flights and prices are just as much a part of the digital product range as services for travel preparation, such as online check-in or the option to reserve a time slot for the security checkpoint. During the trip, customers can receive up-to-date information about their itinerary on request and can flexibly adjust their bookings via extensive self-service options, whether in the event of flight delays and cancellations or their own changes to travel plans.

In the future, a special focus will be placed on personalization in order to offer customers an individualized travel experience for vacation and business trips. The product range will also be gradually expanded to include travel packages from Eurowings Holidays, flights from partner airlines, and other ancillary services. These include, for example, options for the sustainable air travel, but also digital booking of all types of group travel, payment with miles from the Miles&More frequent flyer program via ‘Cash&Miles’ or the new corporate program ‘EW4Business’.

Doubling the number of employees at the Cologne site

With the 150 additional specialists, Eurowings Digital will be doubling its team at the Cologne-Mülheim site to around 300 employees. Recruiting has already been intensified since the fall of 2022 and the onboarding of new team members has been made even more personal. The offices in the Carlswerk startup campus are especially designed for collaborative formats, team workshops and social events. The company emphasizes a hybrid and a trust-based work model that relies on international and diverse talent and lives an agile way of working. This has been well received: Employees from 30 nations and excellent ratings on kununu, Europe's leading rating platform for employers, praise Eurowings Digital's corporate culture and talent development. “This is a good basis for playing in the e-commerce Champions League,” say Michael Erfert and Johannes Hannes, the managing directors of Eurowings Digital.

For more information on Eurowings Digital and job openings, visit www.eurowings-digital.de.

Strategy

Against the backdrop of rising demand for business flights, Eurowings is significantly increasing its offer for business travelers and from September will be offering around 30 per cent more flights compared to the previous year. This is Eurowings' response to the strong growth in demand for business destinations such as Vienna, Zurich, London and Milan. At the same time, the Lufthansa subsidiary is expanding the capacity of its BIZclass product on numerous routes.

"We see very clearly that after the end of the summer holidays in some German states, the demand for business flights has increased significantly," says Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. "Many business travelers want to attend their meetings in person again and are booking their flights now. Even though we have not yet reached the pre-Corona level, the incoming bookings clearly show us the progressive normalization in this segment as well. We are responding to this with a 30 per cent increase in services and more BIZclass capacity."

Eurowings is also observing a progressive normalization of the processes on the ground and in the air. For weeks now, the airline has been bringing its passengers to their destinations with a reliability of 99 per cent - a high value widely recognized in the industry.

Düsseldorf

From its largest base in Düsseldorf, Eurowings serves more than 30 classic business destinations in around ten countries. As part of the expansion of the programme, the highly popular connections to Berlin, Zurich and Milan will be increased with up to 10,000 additional seats on offer. In addition, Eurowings will offer twice-daily connections to Stockholm, Prague, Dresden, Birmingham, Geneva, Lyon and Salzburg. Other business destinations from Düsseldorf include Athens, Belgrade, Bologna, Budapest, Gdansk, Hamburg, Copenhagen, Krakow, Rome, Gothenburg, Graz, London, Lisbon, Linz, Manchester, Marseille, Newcastle and Vienna. In total, Eurowings passengers can choose from more than 100 direct connections from the NRW state capital.

Cologne/Bonn

From Cologne/Bonn, Eurowings is particularly increasing its capacity on the highly demanded route to Berlin: for example, more than 6,000 additional seats will go on sale for this route in September. Business travelers will then be able to choose from up to six daily departures to the German capital. In total, Eurowings serves more than 60 direct destinations throughout Europe from Cologne/Bonn, including Stockholm, Athens, Bologna, Budapest, Hamburg, Rome, London, Lisbon, Milan, Munich, Prague, Salzburg, Vienna and Zurich, all of which are important destinations for business travel.

Hamburg

From Hamburg, Eurowings is doubling its services on the route to Amsterdam. The connection to Milan will also be significantly increased. From September, the Hanseatic city will again be connected three times daily with the destinations Vienna and Munich. Eurowings' services from Hamburg include the important destinations for business travelers Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Stuttgart, Munich, Stockholm, Budapest, Paris, Rome, London, Lisbon, Oslo, Salzburg, Vienna and Zurich. In total, travelers with Eurowings can choose from 50 destinations from Hamburg.

Stuttgart

At the Stuttgart base, Eurowings is increasing its offer by more than 150,000 additional seats for business destinations. For example, after the summer break, the connection to Bremen is back in the programme. Eurowings is offering a third more flights on routes to Budapest, Hamburg and Milan. The market leader at Stuttgart Airport offers more than 60 destinations - including business connections to Amsterdam, Athens, Belgrade, Berlin, Rome, Graz, London, Lisbon, Tbilisi and Vienna.

Berlin

From Berlin, business travelers will have access to a daily Eurowings connection to Stockholm for the first time - making Berlin the fourth direct connection from Germany that Eurowings offers to the Swedish capital. Business travelers from the German capital benefit from the high-frequency connections to Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf and Salzburg with Eurowings. To these destinations alone there are more than 200 flights a week to and from Berlin in the Eurowings flight schedule.

Strategy

This is good news after the worst crisis in aviation. At present, however, the infrastructure has not yet been fully restored. The entire aviation industry, especially in Europe, is currently suffering from bottlenecks and staff shortages. This affects airports, ground handling services, air traffic control, and also airlines.

Lufthansa and Eurowings have implemented numerous measures to ensure the most incredible possible stability of the flight schedule and thus offer their customers the best possible planning security. However, it is foreseeable that the flight schedules will not be able to be flown as hoped due to the bottlenecks.

To inform customers as early as possible, Lufthansa has already removed 900 domestic and intra-European flights from the system for July at its hubs in Frankfurt and Munich. The cancellations affect the weekdays Friday, Saturday, and Sunday - equivalent to five percent of the planned capacity on weekends. Eurowings is also forced to take several hundred flights off the system for the month of July in order to stabilise the tourist offer.

Passengers will be informed immediately about the cancellations and rebooked if possible. Alternatively, passengers within Germany can travel to the hubs in Frankfurt and Munich by train. Lufthansa and Eurowings have not made the decision lightly and regret the cancellations and the associated inconvenience for guests.

Strategy

At 6:35 a.m. local time, the aircraft with the registration D-AENA took off for its first commercial flight under flight number EW9584, carrying 180 passengers from Düsseldorf to Palma de Mallorca.
The A320neo aircraft will initially fly from Düsseldorf to Málaga, Athens, Barcelona, Berlin, Budapest, Dresden, Geneva, Hamburg, Lisbon, Lyon, Munich, Milan, Palma de Mallorca, Prague, Vienna and Zurich. After an introductory phase, the A320neo will then also take off from Hamburg Airport.

The A320neo as sustainability ambassador for #makechangefly

The Airbus A320neo is by far the most efficient and quiet short- and medium-haul jet in the world and the most visible sign yet of a series of more than 50 sustainability initiatives at Eurowings. With leading technology from Airbus and CFM LEAP, the aircraft has a significantly improved environmental performance compared to previous generations: with a 50 percent reduction in noise emissions, an up to 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and a total investment of more than USD 1.5 billion, the new fleet addition is the most expensive investment project in Eurowings' nearly 30-year corporate history.

"Together with the Lufthansa Group, we want to fly at the top of the competition in all areas, also and especially when it comes to sustainability," said Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof. The brand-new Eurowings aircraft, which is equipped with a special logo, is one of the first ambassadors for the recently launched, broad-based sustainability initiative of the Lufthansa Group, #makechangefly. It bundles the most important projects for achieving the climate goals that the Lufthansa Group has set for itself: carbon-neutral by 2050.

More to come in 2022: addition of six additional A320neo aircraft

Eurowings will receive a total of 13 aircraft with the new engine model: eight A320neo aircraft with 180 seats each and five A321neo aircraft with 232 seats each. Following the entry into service of the first A320neo, six more aircraft will be put into service in 2022 and one more in 2024. Five Airbus A321neo will be delivered to Eurowings in the course of 2023. The introduction of the aircraft into service is part of Eurowings' wide-ranging activities and measures to significantly reduce aircraft noise and carbon emissions.

Redesigned Airspace Cabin for even more passenger comfort

The baggage compartments in the new Airspace Cabin have a 40 percent larger volume and can even hold 60 percent more suitcases, as these can be stowed in the compartments vertically. Under the flight number EW6971 the world's most efficient and powerful medium-haul jet took off at 11.59 a.m. and landed at 13.33 p.m. at Düsseldorf Airport, where the latest addition to the fleet was duly welcomed with a water fountain. After landing, the neo (which stands for "new engine option") was officially handed over to Eurowings Technik. The technical operation in Düsseldorf with more than 200 employees will carry out the remaining upgrades on the aircraft in the coming weeks. The first commercial flight with passengers is expected to take place in early June.

“The neo is the most visible sign so far of a series of more than 50 sustainability projects at Eurowings”, says Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings. "Significantly quieter and with considerable fuel and carbon savings, the aircraft is a decisive lever in the implementation of our ambitious environmental goals. The neo will help ensure that we – together with the entire Lufthansa Group – also lead the competition in the discipline of sustainability."

1.5 billion: most expensive sustainability project in the company's history

The Airbus A320neo is by far the most efficient and quiet short- and medium-haul jet in the world. With Airbus' leading technology and CFM LEAP, the aircraft has a significantly improved environmental performance compared to previous aircraft generations: With 50 percent reduced noise emissions, up to 20 per cent less fuel consumption and equally reduced carbon emissions and an investment of more than USD 110 million per aircraft, the new fleet addition is the most expensive sustainability project in Eurowings' nearly 30-year corporate history.

"We are very pleased about the landing of Eurowings' first A320neo at Düsseldorf Airport. The aircraft type is characterized by more efficient fuel consumption and lower noise emissions compared to similar models. This is an important step on the way to climate-friendly air traffic. Together with our strong airline partner, we have kept our sight on climate and environmental protection and have set clear goals for ourselves. The airport wants to be climate-neutral by the year 2035," emphasizes Thomas Schnalke, CEO of Düsseldorf Airport.

4,500 tonnes of carbon savings per aircraft and year and 500 km more range

Eurowings is the first and only airline in the Lufthansa Group to equip all 13 neo with the LEAP (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion) engine from CFM. The new, significantly larger engines can save a further 3,700 tonnes of carbon equivalents per aircraft and year. Thanks to the reduced fuel consumption, the neo also has a range that is increased by about 500 kilometers compared to its predecessor. The 2.40-metre-long wing tips, so-called sharklets, will save an additional 800 tonnes of carbon equivalents per aircraft per year.

Six more A320neo aircraft coming in 2022

Eurowings will receive a total of eight A320neo aircraft with 180 seats and five A321neo aircraft with 232 seats. A total of seven A320neo planes will be added to the fleet in 2022, another one in 2024, and five Airbus A321neo aircraft will be delivered to Eurowings over the course of 2023. The commissioning of the aircraft is part of Eurowings' many activities and measures to significantly reduce aircraft noise.

"People are eager and ready to travel again and they can do so best in the A320's widest single aisle cabin in the sky featuring the award-winning, new Airbus Airspace cabin. We applaud Eurowings on its decision to build its future fleet on the A320neo, which operates at 20 percent less fuel burn and CO2 by halving the noise - compared to previous generation aircraft," said Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus Group International. "We are honoured to welcome Eurowings as the latest A320neo Family operator".

Newly designed Airspace cabin for even more passenger comfort

The Eurowings A320neo will be configured with 180 seats. The A321neo will have a seating capacity of 232 and will be operated on busy holiday flights, for example to Palma de Mallorca. All neos will include the familiar Eurowings fares: BIZclass, SMART and BASIC. The new baggage compartments in the Airspace Cabin have a 40 per cent larger volume and can even hold 60 per cent more suitcases, as these can be stowed vertically in the compartments. Another highlight is the new flexible lighting system, which adapts to passengers' biorhythms depending on the phase of the flight and time of day, illuminating the cabin in either warm orange or cooler blue tones.

Strategy

Over the next twelve months, Germany's largest leisure airline will fill around 750 new positions in the cockpits and cabins of its two AOCs, Eurowings Germany and Eurowings Europe. With this, Eurowings is systematically continuing the course it embarked on last year. During the most difficult crisis in air traffic, the airline successfully completed a comprehensive realignment, focusing more strongly on tourist destinations and the growing private travel business. As a result, the Lufthansa subsidiary was one of the very few airlines in Europe to hire staff again as early as 2021 – around 750 new crew members in the cockpit and cabin, including numerous employees from Lufthansa Group airlines who had lost their jobs. Now Eurowings is set to grow further, both nationally and internationally: in 2022, the airline will add around 550 additional flight attendants and 200 pilots at locations throughout Europe. Staffing levels will also be increased in business areas on the ground, for example at Eurowings Technik in Cologne and Düsseldorf, in sales and in the customer experience division.

"We are pleased to be able to offer new colleagues a perspective at Eurowings again this year in order to continue our planned growth," says Anja Draxler, Head of HR & Legal at Eurowings. "With more than 1,500 new hires within 24 months, we are investing in the future viability of Eurowings at a time when our industry is working its way out of the deepest crisis. At the same time, we are setting the course for a significant expansion of our flight program in the summer of 2022."

Strong catch-up effects expected in 2022

Following a winter once again dominated by Covid, the tourism industry expects strong catch-up effects for vacation travel in the 2022 season. As Germany's largest leisure airline, Eurowings will offer travelers more choice than ever before in its summer flight schedule, with over 140 destinations. The clear front-runner here is Europe's popular vacation island Mallorca. Eurowings will fly to Mallorca from more than 20 airports up to 380 times a week in the summer of 2022.

Eurowings expands training offers

Training young people continues to be a high priority for Eurowings after two years with the pandemic. At the company's locations in Cologne and Düsseldorf, ten applicants will start an apprenticeship or dual study program at Eurowings this year. In cooperation with the maintenance and repair company Nayak-LM Germany GmbH training for aircraft mechanics specializing in maintenance will start at Eurowings Technik in Düsseldorf for the first time. In addition to this, training for industrial clerks is also available for the first time in the airline's technical operations. At the same time, Eurowings is expanding its range of dual-study programs: in addition to the established business informatics course, the airline is also offering dual-study placements in aviation management and applied computer science for the first time.

Anyone interested in applying to join the world of aviation can find more information on career opportunities at Eurowings here: https://www.be-lufthansa.com/de/eurowings.

Strategy

The most popular route for booking a free middle seat is the Eurowings flight from Düsseldorf to Palma de Mallorca; Eurowings passengers also particularly like to add the extra comfort and distance to their booking on routes from Hamburg and Cologne/Bonn to Palma.

Eurowings was the first German airline to introduce this service in summer 2020. Since then, free middle seats, which were previously only part of the BIZclass fare, can also be booked in aircraft rows further back – subject to availability. The offer is valid on all Eurowings routes within Europe.

Leading Lufthansa Group hygiene concept gives passengers peace of mind

The health and safety of its passengers and employees is Eurowings' top priority, regardless of whether there is a pandemic or not. Thanks to an industry-leading hygiene concept, which Lufthansa Group airlines introduced at the beginning of the pandemic and have continued to develop, safe flying remains possible. With a whole bundle of measures, Eurowings and Lufthansa ensure that the airplane remains the safest means of transport of all, even during a pandemic: special HEPA air filters make it possible to exchange the air on board completely within three minutes. The resulting excellent air quality, comparable to that of an operating room, combined with face masks, offers a high level of protection for air travelers. After almost two years of the Covid pandemic, there has not been a single verified infection on board. In addition to these measures, Eurowings customers receive disinfectant wipes from Sagrotan, Germany's number one hygiene expert, while boarding. Eurowings also increased the cleaning cycles in the aircraft cabin right at the start of the pandemic.

Covid protection always included: Eurowings has expanded travel insurance coverage

Covid insurance ensures flexibility and makes carefree travel possible in uncertain times: customers who choose a Eurowings travel insurance policy of their choice automatically benefit from included Covid travel protection. Together with its insurance partner HanseMerkur, the airline offers its customers two insurance packages that can be booked directly with the flight for as little as nine euros: a full travel insurance and a travel cancellation insurance; both products automatically include Covid insurance in more concrete terms, the service components take effect, for example, in the event of a failed temperature check at the departure airport or in the event of a suspected Covid infection. The Covid insurance offered by Eurowings also covers additional costs incurred in the event of a delayed return journey and protects against potential quarantine costs as a comprehensive worry-free package.

Flexible rebooking options for all Eurowings flights

Rebooking up to 40 minutes before departure? Very few airlines are that flexible. In addition to the Covid insurance, which offers maximum protection at the destination, Eurowings customers continue to benefit from flexible rebooking options as well as a general return flight guarantee: passengers can change their Eurowings flights free of charge up to shortly before departure, rebook as often as they like and change to another destination within Europe free of charge. Eurowings passengers who are already in their destination country are also guaranteed to be brought back to Germany in the event of a newly issued travel warning or a lockdown - by special flight if necessary.

Strategy

The popular German airline is offering new services in Scandinavia and will initially station five Airbus A320 aircraft in Stockholm by March 2022. This will be the eleventh Eurowings base of operations in Europe and the fifth outside its home market of Germany after Palma de Mallorca, Prague, Pristina, and Salzburg.

For the first time, the Lufthansa Group value carrier will offer attractive direct connections from Scandinavia to business and vacation destinations throughout Europe. With its increased presence in the Nordics, Eurowings will not only provide better connections to and from Sweden, but especially flights to popular beach destinations in Southern Europe for Swedish customers. The latest Eurowings base at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport also brings hundreds of new jobs to the region and – in what is hopefully the final phase of the Corona pandemic – an important stimulus for employment in the Scandinavian aviation market.

Eurowings CEO Jens Bischof: "Sweden is a market that fits perfectly with our goal to be the number one European value carrier. Since the pandemic, many travelers are no longer looking first for the cheapest ticket, but for an airline they can unconditionally trust in terms of safety, reliability, and social responsibility. With our Lufthansa DNA – for example an attractive network of low-cost direct flights and an unmatched customer service – we can offer just that."

In July 2021, Eurowings was again the most punctual airline in Europe and just recently was awarded triple gold at the German Customer Award presentations: best customer service, best customer satisfaction and best value for money. "We have done our homework and responded quickly to new customer needs and requests and used the crisis to make necessary changes in all areas," Bischof emphasizes. "It is why Eurowings is more competitive today than ever before. With our consistent value-for-money approach, we are convinced we will soon also attract many Swedish vacationers and business travelers with our cutting-edge services."

Eurowings flies from Stockholm to 20 European locations for the first time starting on 27 March, 2022. The first published routes to and from Stockholm include popular Southern European sun destinations: Palma de Mallorca, Alicante and Malaga in Spain, Faro in Portugal, and Nice in Southern France. Other attractive destinations Eurowings will initially fly to include Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Copenhagen, Birmingham, Gdansk, and Pristina. Further destinations will be announced in the coming weeks. Tickets can be booked shortly via eurowings.com and the Eurowings app. Tickets are already available for booking starting at SEK 299 (29.99 euros) for a one-way flight.

Cologne-based Eurowings combines Lufthansa's DNA with a value-for-money concept and innovative customer services: an industry-leading health and hygiene concept and the option of booking free middle seats in the rear rows of the aircraft for as little as ten euros for comfort or hygienic reasons. This option alone has already been sold over 50,000 times in a short period and is a bestseller among Eurowings customers.

Strategy

That has never happened before. No one masters the interplay between flights and tourism better than Eurowings," says a delighted Karlheinz Kögel, who has been operating the tour operator brand Eurowings Holidays with his HLX Group since December 2019. Travel agencies can now also benefit from the strong increase in demand for low-cost air travel packages, which were previously marketed exclusively via the company's own portal holidays.eurowings.com. The products of the tour operator brand can now be booked via Amadeus Leisure IT.

"Despite all the prophecies of doom, travel agencies will not lose their relevance in the future. Especially in the current situation, customers have a great need for advice and personal contact. To be able to fulfill these customer wishes and to position ourselves more broadly, we have decided to enter stationary distribution," says touristic manager Kögel, explaining his step.

Agreements for co-operation were already concluded with approximately 1,300 agencies - among them the offices of Lufthansa City Center inclusive the mobile travel consultation via travelista, co-operation with Best-Reisen and the mobile travel salesmen of Solamento. Other travel agency alliances have expressed interest. Chains and single offices, which would like to book the inexpensive quality package tours of Eurowings Holidays, can apply under reisebuero@holidays.ch for an agency. The entry commission is ten percent.

The current success attributes Eurowings Holidays not only to the generally rising demand, but also to the all-round carefree package, which offers customers a maximum of flexibility: they only pay a deposit of 50 euros when booking. Rebooking and cancellation costs up to 14 days before departure are already included here.

"Whether it's a beach vacation, a city break or a last-minute trip, demand for package tours continues to grow. Flexibility and security are increasingly important, especially in times of corona. That's why we, as Germany's largest vacation airline, have made our Eurowings Holidays offer much more flexible," says Michael Erfert, Head of Sales, Distribution & Digital at Eurowings.

The airline's tour operator brand links the management of Eurowings flights with low-cost hotel offers. In this way, very attractive packages are currently being created, especially for short-term travel requests to the Canary Islands, Greece, and Mallorca. "Eurowings has played a key role in ensuring that our sales machine is currently running at full speed. We are perfectly integrated as a tour operator. In addition, the airline is pushing our package offers via its own website, from which we are benefiting greatly," says Kögel, who is more than satisfied with the partnership.

In the meantime, Eurowings Holidays is also present on TV and on board for the first time: passengers can find vacation impressions of some destinations on their tables in the aircraft, and a Eurowings Holidays TV campaign is currently being broadcast on Sonnenklar TV. This gives passengers the opportunity to get in the mood for their vacation from home or en route.

Strategy

Germany's largest vacation airline is thus able to offer around 250 flight attendants a new perspective.

As vaccination rates rise, infection figures fall and travel restrictions come to an end, demand for flights is increasing significantly. Tourist destinations are currently in particularly high demand. In the wake of this revival, Eurowings has already recruited 400 new crew members in the cockpit and cabin in recent months in order to be able to operate its planned summer flight program in 2021. The positions were advertised internally within the Lufthansa Group. In this way, Eurowings was able to offer new perspectives to employees from the Lufthansa Group who are affected by job cuts. The advertisement was also explicitly directed at crews from Germanwings GmbH, SunExpress Deutschland and LGW, whose flight operations could not be continued in the wake of the pandemic.

For the 2022 summer season, Eurowings is again assuming growth options for the first time, which will enable further hiring in line with demand. The Lufthansa subsidiary therefore launched an application process on June 23 to fill 250 additional positions in the Eurowings cabin. The announcement is being made both Lufthansa Group-internally and externally: it is thus once again also aimed at crew members of the Lufthansa Group who are threatened or affected by job losses. Applicants from Lufthansa Group flight operations will be given preference in the selection process, with the best candidates being selected as is customary in the industry.

Employees who already fly in the cabin for Eurowings Germany have already been offered increases in working hours and internal transfers in the run-up to the recruitment process. Purser upgrades are also planned in line with existing demand.

Strategy

Recent progress in the approval and provision of vaccines, as well as increasingly sophisticated testing procedures, give reason to hope that the aviation industry will see an initial recovery by summer 2021. Accordingly, Eurowings is also preparing for catch-up effects and a return to stronger demand. A dynamic recovery is expected in particular for tourist routes, the core business of Eurowings, and for the home-holiday traffic segment ("Visit Family and Friends") as soon as the first travel restrictions are dropped.

In addition, German air traffic is characterized by market exits and withdrawals following the historic business slumps of the Corona crisis. Competitors such as Ryanair and Easyjet have left strong Eurowings locations such as Düsseldorf or Stuttgart, and airlines such as Sun Express Deutschland or Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW) have had to leave the market altogether. Based on this reorganization, Eurowings, currently the market leader at the German airports of Düsseldorf, Berlin, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn, is preparing for its restart in summer 2021. In order to be able to cover the traditionally busiest travel period of the year in terms of personnel, Eurowings is planning, among other things, to hire up to 130 cabin staff.

The basis for this recruitment of new staff in line with demand is a crisis package agreed between Eurowings and the ver.di trade union for cabin staff at Eurowings Deutschland. The agreement with social partners and the crisis contribution of the cabin staff of Eurowings Germany is a necessary step to be able to overcome the severe crisis and secure the future of the company in the long term.

Currently, Eurowings is assuming an upturn in tourism demand from summer 2021, which should lead to full employment in the Eurowings Germany cabin again for the first time. Eurowings will therefore shortly launch an application process to fill around 130 cabin jobs. This is an internal Lufthansa Group call for applications, which can be used to offer a new perspective to employees from the Lufthansa Group who are affected by job cuts. The exact details are the subject of current negotiations with ver.di. Employees who already fly for Eurowings Germany will initially be offered increases in working hours and internal transfers in advance of the hirings.

In view of the volatile situation, Eurowings reserves the right to adjust the ramp-up of flight operations up or down over the course of the year. The exceptional situation dictates that flight capacities be planned as closely as possible to demand. With rapid market adjustments last year, Eurowings demonstrated how dynamically the company can adapt to fundamentally new situations.

Strategy

He succeeds Michael Knitter, who will leave the German airline at the end of March at his own request. Together with Jens Bischof, CEO and Spokesman of the Management Board, and Frank Bauer, Head of Finance, Human Resources and IT, Jens Ritter will form a three-member Eurowings Management Board from now on.

"We are deeply indebted to Michael Knitter," said Christina Foerster, Chairwoman of the Eurowings Supervisory Board. "For more than five years Michael Knitter has been standing for flying excellence, continuity and consistency in times of great change at Eurowings. Knitter has set up the flight operations organisation in recent years in such a way that Eurowings is now regularly one of the most punctual airlines in Europe.

Jens Ritter (47) already has valuable experience as COO of the Lufthansa subsidiary Austrian Airlines. Christina Foerster: "I’m convinced that Jens Ritter is the right successor to enrich the operations of Eurowings with his own ideas and develop them further in a highly dynamic environment".

Jens Ritter (47) started his flying career in 2000 with Lufthansa after studying aerospace in Munich and training as an Airbus A320 pilot at the Bremen Commercial Aviation School. In 2008, he switched to the Airbus A330/340 as a long-haul pilot, and in 2014 he trained at Germanwings to become a captain on the Airbus A320. Jens Ritter assumed his first management position in 2005 as team leader for the project 'A380 Onboard IT'. Later he held various management positions and was co-responsible for the introduction of the paperless cockpit at Lufthansa. From 2011 Ritter worked in the area of Flight Operations and Fuel Efficiency at Lufthansa. In 2014 he took over as Head of Operations Efficiency and Strategy at Lufthansa Passage. At the same time, he is also in charge of the Lufthansa Group project to standardize Group-wide flight operations processes.

Since February 2016, Jens Ritter has been Accountable Manager for the operational business of Austrian Airlines, responsible for Flight Operations, Safety and Security, Planning and Control, Training, Technology and Ground Operations. As Chief Operating Officer (COO), he has been part of the extended Management Board of the Austrian airline since February 2020. Originally, this fare offer was valid for (re-)bookings until the end of the year. Now the offer to the customer is being extended: all airline fares can now be rebooked free of charge as often as desired up to February 28, 2021, if the rebooking is also made before that date. After that, another rebooking is possible free of charge.

Lufthansa Group Airlines had already made it possible for its customers to rebook their tickets free of charge in the spring. The abolition of the rebooking fee applies worldwide for all new bookings in all fares on short, medium and long-haul routes. This makes it even more important to strengthen confidence in flying as a safe form of travel. This is why the Lufthansa Group has signed up to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) charter for safe flying under pandemic conditions. In doing so, it has committed itself to the strictest infection protection standards in air travel worldwide. By voluntarily implementing this standard, the Lufthansa Group is underlining that the safety of its passengers and employees as always is of top priority.

EASA is establishing guidelines that were developed in cooperation with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The Robert Koch Institute is the German representative of the ECDC network. By involving all member states in cooperation with the ECDC, EASA was able to define the strictest rules of an association of states worldwide. Uniform standards have been established which reduce complexity for the airlines and create reliability and additional safety.

The airports of Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna and Brussels have also committed themselves to the guidelines. This means that an interlocking framework for the protection of passengers on the ground and in the air has been established.

Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG: "We have introduced extensive hygiene measures along the entire travel chain to optimally protect our customers and our employees. By signing the EASA charter, we are sending a signal that we as the Lufthansa Group support highest standards and uniform, cross-border rules in air transport. Only with more uniformity and stability in terms of regulation will more customers book flights again. "

“We are extremely pleased to have Lufthansa and the entire Lufthansa Group as signatories to our charter,” said EASA Executive Director Patrick Ky. “The addition of such an important and well-respected airline group, with strong representation in multiple regions of Europe, ensures a high standard of safety in travel between major European hubs and will increase the robustness of the feedback we receive. It is important that regulators and industry cooperate closely during these times to apply effective and proportionate measures that will ensure that aviation remains as safe and efficient as ever.”

The Lufthansa Group, together with the industry associations International Air Transport Association (IATA) and Airlines for Europe (A4E), accompanied the development process of the charter from the perspective of aviation practice. Important standards for components such as the anchoring of mandatory masks, filtering of cabin air and increased ventilation of the aircraft on the ground, appropriate cabin cleaning, personal protection measures, working towards digital contact tracking and physical distancing measures on the ground and during boarding/boarding have been developed with support from the Lufthansa Group. The Lufthansa Group also implements further protective measures, such as distributing disinfectant wipes to all passengers or offering generous rebooking facilities for its passengers. The Lufthansa Group also has a strict guideline for implementing the obligation to wear masks on board.

The Lufthansa Group will continue to closely monitor the development of the EASA/ECDC guidelines and therefore will transmit key figures to EASA. In addition, the Lufthansa Group enters into a dialogue on the further development of the standards. The focus will be on integrating new scientific and technical findings and operational experience in implementing the standards. The Lufthansa Group is working to ensure that other countries, airlines and airports around the world adopt the EASA standards in order to guarantee the most uniform standards possible for travelers and make a successful contribution to combating the pandemic.

Strategy

Following the lifting of the travel warning, the interest in holiday destinations such as Italy, Spain, Greece and Croatia in particular is growing sharply. Therefore, the Lufthansa subsidiary will be offering more than 100 summer sun and beach destinations in its flight schedule again in July.

Business travellers will also benefit from a significant expansion of frequencies to important business destinations within Europe. For the first time since the corona crisis, double end-of-day connections are returning to the timetable - with the focus on flights from Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn. All other Lufthansa Group airlines are currently examining whether they will also be adjusting their GCC accordingly. Article "11.5 Obligation to wear a mask" includes the following points:

“You are required to wear a mouth-nose covering during boarding, throughout the flight and when leaving the aircraft. Children up to the age of six years and persons who are demonstrably unable to wear a face covering for health reasons or because of a disability are exempt from this obligation. The face covering may be temporarily removed for consumption of drinks and food, for communication with deaf persons, for identification purposes and for other necessary activities incompatible with the wearing of a mouth-nose covering. So-called everyday masks made of fabric as well as medical protective masks can be used to cover mouth and nose. So-called everyday masks made of fabric as well as medical protective masks can be used to cover mouth and nose.”

The Lufthansa Group airlines have been asking all passengers to wear a mouth and nose cover on board their flights since 4 May. Furthermore, the company recommended that they be worn during the entire journey, i.e. also before or after a flight at the airport, whenever the required minimum distance cannot be guaranteed without any restrictions. In the interest of the health of customers and employees, by introducing the mask requirement into the GCC, it is clearly underlined that wearing a mask is mandatory for all passengers.

Strategy

Following the lifting of the travel warning, interest in holiday destinations such as Italy, Spain, Greece and Croatia in particular rises sharply. This is why Eurowings will already be putting 30 to 40 percent of its flight capacity back into the air in July - with a focus on flights from Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn. The airlines of the Lufthansa Group are also expanding their flight programme.

Customers are asked to take into account the current entry and quarantine regulations of the respective destinations when planning their trip. Throughout the entire trip, stricter hygiene and security regulations may result in restrictions, for example, longer waiting times at airport security checkpoints.

From 8 June onwards, guests on all Lufthansa and Eurowings flights are obliged to wear a mouth and nose cover on board throughout the entire journey. This serves the safety of all passengers on board. The General Conditions of Carriage (GTC) will be amended accordingly. Eurowings also recommends that passengers wear a mouth-nose cover during the entire journey, e.g. also before or after the flight at the airport, whenever the required minimum distance cannot be guaranteed without restriction.

Strategy

Travel will soon be easier - even across national borders. Thus, the summer holiday 2020 within reach again. Against this background, Eurowings has significantly expanded its June flight schedule and added 40 new sunshine destinations in Europe to its program. This is the airline's response to the growing desire of its customers to finally be able to travel again. In these times, travel planning is often still associated with uncertainty - Eurowings wants to dispel this uncertainty and answers questions that travelers are currently asking themselves in a specially produced video.

All measures at a glance

Safety and health are top priorities for Eurowings. For this reason, the airline has taken extensive measures to increase health protection along the entire travel chain – both on the ground and in the air.

Before the flight
In order to give travelers more planning security, Eurowings customers will continue to benefit from flexible rebooking options concerning their bookings. Check-in can be carried out in advance via their own smartphone.

At the airport
Eurowings asks its passengers to bring a mouth and nose protection to all flights and to wear it both at the airport and on board. Eurowings flight attendants also wear such protection in direct contact with customers. This is a joint effort to ensure that safe travel remains possible even in times of corona. Thus, Eurowings is guided by the official regulations of numerous European countries in which the wearing of a mouth and nose protection is now mandatory in public. Therefore, the previous rule of keeping the neighbouring seat free is no longer applicable. Nevertheless, seats will be allocated as far as possible spread over a large area of the cabin.

When boarding
With the help of notices at the airport and at the gates as well as through recordings on monitors and corresponding announcements, airports and service providers implement the applicable distance rules of at least 1.5 meters from one person to the next. Boarding is carried out in groups and by the passenger displaying the boarding pass autonomously.

Rules of conduct for our crews
Before and during the flight as well as on the ground during transit times, contact between crew members and ground staff is minimized to maintain a safe distance as far as possible. Communication between cockpit and ground staff is carried out in most cases via headset, while the crew uses the interphone as the main communication channel. The entire crew makes sure that their hands are disinfected regularly. In addition, both on-board sales and on-board service are reduced to avoid hand contact as far as possible. Payment on board is carried out cashless.

Hygiene measures on board
Eurowings implements extensive measures for cleaning aircraft: Each aircraft is disinfected when it stops at its home base. In the cabin, this includes the luggage compartments, armrests, seat belts and buckles as well as tables. In the washrooms, the toilet bowl and seat, washbasin, fittings, mirror and door handle are cleaned thoroughly. All work surfaces and sinks in the aircraft galley are also disinfected.

In principle, an infection on board remains very unlikely. The air in all aircraft is cleaner than the one on earth. It consists of 60 percent fresh air from outside. The air circulating in the cabin is filtered and cleaned of impurities such as dust, bacteria and viruses. Filter performance and airflow comply with the standards for clinical operating theatres.

On arrival
Eurowings flights at domestic airports will only be positioned directly at the building wherever possible due to the existing airport infrastructure and official regulations. In this way, bus trips by passengers can largely be avoided.

In addition, Eurowings will regularly inform its passengers about current developments concerning travelling in times of corona on eurowings.com/corona as well as through all other channels.

Strategy

In addition, the company recommends that passengers wear them throughout the entire journey, i.e. also before or after the flight at the airport, whenever the required minimum distance cannot be guaranteed without restriction. Despite numerous adjustments to service procedures, it is not always possible to maintain the required distance on a flight. Therefore, this measure serves as additional protection for all passengers. All flight attendants on Lufthansa Group flights in direct contact with customers will also wear a corresponding mask.

The Lufthansa Group is thus complying with the official regulations of numerous European countries in which the wearing of a mouth and nose cover is now mandatory in public places.

All passengers are requested to bring their own mouth and nose cover. A reusable fabric mask is recommended, but all other types of coverings such as simple disposable masks or scarves are also possible. The airlines will inform their passengers in advance by SMS or e-mail and on their websites about the new regulation.

The obligation to wear the mask will preliminarily apply until 31.08.2020.

The current regulation of Lufthansa Group Airlines to keep the neighbouring seat free in Economy and Premium Economy Class will no longer apply, as wearing the mouth-nose cover provides adequate health protection. Due to the current low occupancy rate, seats will nevertheless be allocated as widely as possible throughout the cabin.

In principle, infection on board remains very unlikely. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, no concrete cases of transmission on Lufthansa Group flights have become known. All Lufthansa Group aircraft are equipped with the highest quality air filters, which guarantee air quality similar to that in an operating theatre. In addition, the air circulates vertically instead of being distributed throughout the cabin.

Strategy

Due to the partial renewal of the runway, which was carried out in the period from April 6 until April 22, 2020, no passenger operation was possible in Stuttgart. Eurowings – like the other airlines in Stuttgart – had to temporarily pause its basic flight programme from Baden-Württemberg.

From Stuttgart, Eurowings, the market leader in Stuttgart, flies its passengers to Hamburg and Berlin up to six times a week each, thus ensuring basic service for the important economic region of Baden-Württemberg.

In addition to domestic flights from Stuttgart to Hamburg and Berlin, Eurowings also offers selected flights from its largest locations Düsseldorf, Hamburg and Cologne/Bonn in response to the current corona crisis. Due to the strong spread of the corona virus in recent weeks and the resulting decline in bookings as well as numerous entry restrictions, Eurowings had to drastically adjust its flight schedule. The flight programme on offer was temporarily reduced to about ten percent of the previous capacity.

The Eurowings harvest worker flights will continue to be a focal point of the reduced flight schedule. Since the start of this "airlift for farmers" at the beginning of April, Eurowings has already flown more than 5,000 harvest workers from Romania to Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden, Leipzig, and Nuremberg. Further special flights are planned in the coming days and weeks, more than 100 in total, to provide the best possible help to farmers in a very difficult situation and to secure the supply of fruit and vegetables in Germany.

Strategy
