Eurowings with strong result after nine months

Lufthansa subsidiary on course for a profitable 2023 after successful summer and autumn season

Summary
  • Expansion to become Germany's largest leisure airline pays off
  • Strong profit for Lufthansa Business segment
  • Top destination Mallorca served by 26 airports

The airline Eurowings is on course for a profitable 2023 after a successful summer and autumn season: after nine months, the Eurowings business segment is on the Lufthansa Group's books with a positive result of 147 million euros (adjusted EBIT). In the same period last year, the segment, which specializes in affordable business and leisure flights, had still posted a loss of 136 million euros.

The financial turnaround is largely due to strategic changes since the Covid crisis. The significant expansion of the tourism business helped the Cologne-based company to achieve a high increase in turnover of 42 percent to more than two billion euros. In particular, Eurowings benefited from the continuing desire to travel after the pandemic and a summer season with a record number of guests in many places, including Mallorca, where Eurowings operates a growing base connecting Europe's most popular sunny island with now 26 airports in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Among the more than 140 destinations in the Eurowings route network, vacation destinations such as Greece, Italy and Spain were also very much in demand.

Kai Duve, Eurowings CFO: "Our teams deserve the highest recognition: they have turned over every stone during the crisis, fundamentally changed the fleet and the flight schedule – with many new impulses, especially in the direction of tourism. This is how we have developed from an airline with a strong domestic focus into a leading European leisure airline. We are benefiting considerably from this repositioning as a 'Value Airline for Europe'. This success is first and foremost a strong team effort by our employees, which will foreseeably lead us into the profit zone in 2023 as well. After all the difficult years, this is a historic milestone for Eurowings."
